TRAVEL INFORMATION
Within U.S., Canada or Mexico
For travel by air to or from Canada, the U.S. or Mexico, passports are required, effective January 23, 2008.
For travel by land across the Canada/U.S. or U.S./Mexico borders, passports may be required for Canadian and U.S. citizens until 2008. A passport is the only proof of your nationality and identity that is accepted in all countries and is highly reccommended regardless. Due to the lengthy wait at times, you are urged to apply for your passport as soon as possible. The policy is subject to change. Please refer to the website(s) below or contact your government for more information.
If the passport requirement does not go into affect, for travel by land, you must have proof of your citizenship or permanent residence. The following documents are acceptable as evidence of citizenship or permanent residence for land travelers:
- A valid U.S. or Canadian passport
- An original U.S. or Canadian birth certificate plus photo identification; or
- An original naturalization certificate plus photo identification.
Other documents such as a driver’s license or voter registration card will NOT be accepted as proof of your citizenship.
United States citizens do NOT require a Visa to visit Canada or Mexico. Likewise, Canadian citizens do NOT require a Visa to visit the United States or Mexico.
Outside U.S., Canada or Mexico
Travel requirements for U.S. and Canadian citizens varies by the country where you are going. Youth Unlimited will help you understand the necessary requirements. You will need a valid U.S. or Canadian passport to travel outside of the U.S. and Canada and should apply for one immediately.
Keep It Safe
Make photocopies of your passport’s identification page and/or of your identification cards and keep the copies separate from the original when you travel. For added security, leave a copy with a friend or relative at home.
Traveling with Minors
Any adult who is not a parent or guardian should have written permission to supervise the child from the parent or guardian, as well as the child's identification and carry it with them. A letter would also facilitate entry for any one parent traveling with their children. This permission letter should contain addresses and telephone numbers where the parent or guardian can be reached. An example letter is available (see link below). It is recommended, but not required, that the letter be notarized.
