General Description: In Flagstaff, only about 12-15% of community members regularly attend church. Hope Church’s mission is to reach people who have wandered away from God and to help them draw closer to Him again. One of their strategies is to make contact with families who have young children since that is a time when people often consider re-establishing their ties with the church. As part of the Flagstaff SERVE, you will help Hope Church reach their community by leading Vacation
Bible School for community children. The surrounding area is a beautiful mixture of mountains (Flagstaff is located at 7,000 ft elevation), canyons, pine forest, and desert.  Average high temperature in June is 79 degrees; the nights cool off into the 40’s. It is sunny almost every day. Due to the presence of the Lowell Observatory and the Naval Observatory, Flagstaff is a “dark sky” city - so at night the city lights are dim and the stars are clear and bright. Our worship style is “blended” and fairly causal so no formal clothes are needed for Sunday.

Facilities:  You will be staying with host families from Hope Church or a local campground.

Work Sites: You will serve as crew leaders or station leaders as part of the church’s Vacation Bible School for community youth in the morning. If you’re musically or technically gifted, the SERVE team is also looking for worship leaders and A/V assistance. You may also be involved with serving snacks or leading games. Afternoons are available to prepare for the following morning’s lessons and activities. The Vacation Bible School runs Monday through Thursday.  By participating on this SERVE team, you will allow the church to continue and expand the VBS in 2010 to reach more children and their families.

Day Away: Visit the Grand Canyon (1 1/2 hours away), possibly visit Native American ruins, Slide Rock State Park or hike in the mountains or Sedona’s red rocks. There are also many local attractions and hiking trails in the Flagstaff & Sedona areas. Please note: the elevation can sometimes be an issue for people who are elderly or may have heart or respiratory problems.

Transportation: Registration fees do NOT include transportation to and from this mission experience. As an all-inclusive site, transportation will be provided for you once you arrive at the site. Adult leaders will likely be asked to drive vehicles borrowed or rented by the Host Team during the mission experience. Please drive and treat these vehicles as if they were your own. Drivers will be held responsible for damage to borrowed or rented vehicles. For your decision making purposes, the closest airport is Flagstaff/Grand Canyon (FLG). The Host Team is also willing to pick you up from Phoenix (PHX) which is 2 hours away, but may have less expensive flights. Please DO NOT book airfare until you have received written confirmation from Youth Unlimited that you have been placed at this site.
