General Description: London, Ontario is a city of 350,000 people located in the heart of Southwestern Ontario. Although historically a fairly affluent white collar city its focus in the last decade has moved to an economy largely based in the manufacturing sector and due to the recent downturn in that economy is currently experiencing the second highest unemployment rate in Ontario.
We hope to spend the week working closely with agencies that support the working poor, the disadvantaged and those living at street level, particularly youth. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with our street friends, by either serving at the “Mess”, a Wednesday night dinner and art program, or at the Streetlight bus, a Tuesday and Thursday downtown ministry of food and worship. As well we will be working with the local Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity and Community Resource Agencies to support, assist and build relationships with those most needy in our city. Projects from 2009, that we hope to continue, include: assisting in a breakfast program, building hampers at the food bank, assisting in recreational programs at the Boys and Girls Club, running community BBQ’s in rent geared to income complexes, and various construction projects including building, painting, and demolition. We also hope to initiate some new programs such as running several penny carnivals for neighborhoods.
Facilities: Local Christian School
Work Sites:(in general, what they'll be doing): A variety of worksites will be offered, with an emphasis on working with people rather than for people. Work could include painting, building, gardening and minor renovations as well as assisting in and running children’s programs, packing food hampers, assisting in food programs by preparing and serving food and being the light of God in the city of London.
Day Away:We will spend Thursday morning at a nearby conservation area, exploring God’s creation, hiking, walking, searching for fossils, enjoying a beautiful waterfall and then spend a relaxing afternoon on the shores of Lake Huron swimming, tanning and playing beach games.
Transportation: Registration fees do NOT include transportation to and from the sites. Each group of five or more must provide vehicle(s) and adult driver(s) (typically small group leaders) to transport an equal number of participants during the duration of the mission experience regardless of whether you fly or drive to the site. The vehicles you bring will be used to transport small groups to the work site each day, so 12-passenger vans or mini-vans are preferred. Cars do not facilitate the transportation of an entire small group in one vehicle, so please do not bring them. If you wish to bring a bus, please check with the Host Team to see if this is acceptable before you make arrangements. If your group is unable to provide van transportation, please have a youth leader call Youth Unlimited to discuss options and additional charges.
For your decision making purposes, the closest airport is London, ON International Airport.
Please DO NOT book airfare until you have received written confirmation from Youth Unlimited that you have been placed at this site.
