| NEWARK, NEW JERSEY SERVE Dates: July 10-17, 2010 General Description:Newark SERVE is located in Newark, New Jersey. Newark is the largest city in New Jersey, and the county seat of Essex County. Newark has a population of 281,402,[2] making it the largest municipality in New Jersey and the 65th largest city in the U.S. Newark is also home to major corporations, such as Prudential Financial. It is located approximately 8 miles (13 km) west of Manhattan and 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Staten Island. Together with Elizabeth, it is the home of Newark Liberty International Airport, which was the first major airport to serve the New York metropolitan area. Newark is New Jersey's largest and second-most diverse city, after neighboring Jersey City. Its neighborhoods are populated with people from various backgrounds, such as African Americans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Italians, Albanians, Irish, Spaniards, Jamaicans, Haitians, Mexicans, West Africans, Brazilians, Ecuadorians, Trinidadians and Portuguese population. Poverty remains a consistent problem in Newark, despite its revitalization in recent years. The 1967 riots resulted in a significant population loss of both white and black middle classes that continued from the 1970s through to the 1990s. The city lost over 100,000 residents between 1960 and 1990. Facilities: Galilee Baptist Church and Imani Baptist Church Work Sites: We will be involved in a wide variety of work experiences. You could be doing anything from painting, interacting with economically and physically challenged people, playing with children, leading worship in our church summer program, carpentry, landscaping, serving meals to the homeless, helping in a nursing home, or a variety of other possibilities. Day Away: Manhattan Transportation: Registration fees do NOT include transportation to and from the sites. Each group of five or more must provide vehicle(s) and adult driver(s) (typically small group leaders) to transport an equal number of participants during the duration of the mission experience regardless of whether you fly or drive to the site. The vehicles you bring will be used to transport small groups to the work site each day, so 12-passenger vans or mini-vans are preferred. Cars do not facilitate the transportation of an entire small group in one vehicle, so please do not bring them. If you wish to bring a bus, please check with the Host Team to see if this is acceptable before you make arrangements. If your group is unable to provide van transportation, please have a youth leader call Youth Unlimited to discuss options and additional charges. “The Host Team went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed and accommodated. It (the food) was awesome! They tried to provide local flavor and teen flavor. They made it part of the cultural experience!” "I had a wonderful experience in Newark this past July... overall it was a life-changing experience for me. It gave me a renewed perspective on God and all that he can do. It made me believe in the youth of our church / country. They are such great kids! I can’t wait to go again next year!!"
