| VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA SERVE Dates: July 3 - 10, 2010 (Saturday - Saturday) General Description: Working with different service organizations that minister to the Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, the North Shore, and other areas of the Lower Mainland. The Downtown Eastside is home to thousands, from the homeless to the affluent. Its residents are a dynamic mix of people of many different ethnicities, ages, and incomes, including large and varied urban Aboriginal and Chinese Canadian populations. Many people of all ages, children to seniors, volunteer their time to create a healthy environment at community centers and on the street. In addition to this some will be working in wildlife and conservation projects as part of understanding our role in the stewardship of God’s creation. We will be working predominantly with agencies that serve amongst the poor and homeless of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and the Lonsdale Corridor of North Vancouver. Each group of five or more must provide vehicle(s) and adult driver(s), typically small group leader(s), to transport an equal number of participants during the duration of the mission experience regardless of whether you fly or drive to the site. The vehicles you bring will be used to transport small groups to the work site each day so 12-passenger vans or mini-vans are preferred. Cars do not facilitate the transportation of an entire small group in one vehicle, so please do not bring them. If you wish to bring a bus, please check with the Host Team to see if this is acceptable before you make arrangements. If your group is unable to provide van transportation, please have a youth leader call YU to discuss options and additional charges. For your decision making purposes, the closest airport is Vancouver International (YVR) or Abbotsford International (YXX). YVR is closer but drive time is about the same. YXX probably has cheaper car rental availability. Please DO NOT book airfare until you have received written confirmation from Youth Unlimited that you have been placed at this site.
