Youth Unlimited provides week-long teen mission trips for students with special needs and other faith-forming events for middle and high school age students. Each year we partner with churches to host SERVE events in their local communities, which are five to seven-day youth mission trips that send teens out to care for and restore their world in an environment where they’ll encounter the concepts of justice and missional living. More than just a short trip, SERVE is a faith-forming experience where the communities, congregations and students involved all experience lasting transformation.
SPECIFICALLY FOR THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
The Special Needs SERVE is for people from the ages of 16-28 with special needs that cannot be accommodated at a traditional SERVE Site. The work projects for teen mission participants will be tailored to the ability of the individual students, allowing them to experience the joy that comes from serving others in the name of Christ. Mission special needs participants are partnered with a peer who befriends and works alongside them for the five days. Mechanicsburg SERVE starts June 25th for Participants!
Be a Mentor at Mechanicsburg SERVE!
As a mentor you will be partnered with someone with special needs for the week. You will walk alongside them through worship, devotions, worksites, fun activities and more! Want more information about being a Mentor? Please contact the Youth Unlimited office at firstname.lastname@example.org for more details, registration cost and the application process. Mechanicsburg SERVE starts June 24th for Mentors!
Mechanicsburg is a small town outside the capital city of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It is a self described “Good place to live” and it’s location to many historical and cultural centers makes this Central Pennsylvania town a great place to visit. You are within 3 hours of New York City, 2 hours from Philadelphia or Washington D.C. and 1.5 hours from Baltimore. In addition, you are just 20 miles from Gettysburg and other famous Civil War sites. And also about 20 miles from “The Sweetest Place on Earth” – Hershey, PA! For the outdoor lovers, the Appalachian Trail runs right though the area along with many other outstanding hiking trails, there are several creeks and rivers well suited for fishing and lazy rafting trips. Central Pennsylvania is truly a friendly area.
West Shore Free has been a leader in our community by establishing one of the first disability ministries. Established in 1983, the “A Team” (the Ability Team) has ministered to and with dozens of adults with disabilities. The church and the A Team have served our community in a variety of ways. From food distributions, monthly clothing markets, community rehabilitation, men/women shelter staffing and outreach to Somali immigrants, West Shore is an amazingly active force in our community. In the broader Harrisburg area, there continue to be challenges of poverty, services being cut to the elderly, and a growing immigrant community that needs to learn about Jesus. We have worked hard to integrate the disabled community into all ministries. We also have a growing group of youth with disabilities in the church and we are looking to expand our ministry to reach a broader audience.
Mentors arrive a day early on June 24th and Participants start on June 25th.
All participants will stay at West Shore Free Church, a modern facility with all amenities including two kitchens, separate rooms for male and female guests, a gymnasium and a worship center. Participants will sleep in air conditioned classrooms, most meals will occur in the church or an adjacent covered pavilion, and we will have access to several rooms for activities and worship.
