Registration fees do NOT include transportation to and from the sites. Each youth missionary group must provide vehicle(s) and adult driver(s) (typically small group leaders) to transport an equal number of youth participants during the duration of the mission experience regardless of whether you fly or drive to the site. The vehicles you bring will be used to transport small youth missionary groups to the work site each day, so 12-passenger vans or mini-vans are preferred. Cars do not facilitate the transportation of an entire small group in one vehicle, so please do not bring them. If you wish to bring a bus, please check with the Host Team to see if this is acceptable before you make arrangements. If your group is unable to provide van transportation, please have a youth leader call Youth Unlimited to discuss options and additional charges.
Fort McMurray International Airport (YMM). Please DO NOT book airfare until you have received written confirmation from Youth Unlimited that you have been placed at this site.
Since the Horse River Fire on May 3, 2016, when all 88,000 of Fort McMurray’s citizens were evacuated, recovery has been a long and sometimes painful process. Reconstruction of homes continues, sometimes at a snail’s pace. Falling oil prices have led to layoffs within the community. Fears about living in the middle of a boreal forest that has been characterized as “built to burn” by forestry experts still causes unease. And yet the pioneer spirit of this northern city continues to flourish. The city’s old, “We’ve Got the Energy!” slogan is still appropriate, although replaced now by the “Fort Mac Strong” rally cry that emerged during the fire. Fort McMurray may indeed be strong, but God is stronger, and we thank God for the opportunities He has provided for Christians of all faiths to express the love of Jesus in concrete ways during this time of rebuilding. Evergreen Community Christian Reformed Church will be welcoming SERVE to join in spreading the love of Jesus in our community.
