Registration fees do NOT include transportation to and from the sites. Each youth missionary group must provide vehicle(s) and adult driver(s) (typically small group leaders) to transport an equal number of youth participants during the duration of the mission experience regardless of whether you fly or drive to the site. The vehicles you bring will be used to transport small youth missionary groups to the work site each day, so 12-passenger vans or mini-vans are preferred. Cars do not facilitate the transportation of an entire small group in one vehicle, so please do not bring them. If you wish to bring a bus, please check with the Host Team to see if this is acceptable before you make arrangements. If your group is unable to provide van transportation, please have a youth leader call Youth Unlimited to discuss options and additional charges.
Sioux Gateway Airport in Sioux City, Iowa (SUX). Please DO NOT book airfare until you have received written confirmation from Youth Unlimited that you have been placed at this site.
Sioux City, Iowa and the surrounding area is a place of unexpected ethnic and cultural diversity. It is also a place that bears the marks of the difficulties and hardships facing rural America. Our goal is to help young people experience God’s love for the world as they encounter the people who live in these communities. Together, we will explore issues of social and economic justice that are a part of the saving work of Jesus as we work with members of the Winnebago Reformed Church on the Winnebago Reservation, and with the Siouxland Unity Church – a Laotian community in the heart of Sioux City. Our time will end with a pilgrimage to the Santee, Rosebud, and Pine Ridge Reservations, in order to experience God’s presence with the Native people, and to encounter churches and organizations at work on the reservation.
Participants will be staying at Friendship Community Church in Sergeant Bluff, IA. It is an air-conditioned space. Showers are off campus at the local high school and middle school.
Thursday and Friday of the week will be spent taking a pilgrimage to Wounded Knee, SD. Along the way we will explore the backroads of Nebraska and South Dakota, stopping at a variety of historical and cultural markers. We will spend the night at Lakeview Christian Reformed Church on the Rosebud Reservation where we will hear from members of the community about life on the reservation. Our journey will take us through Badlands National Park and will end in Wall, SD. Groups will then have the option of either returning to Sergeant Bluff to stay the night, or leaving from Wall, SD to head home. The purpose of this trip is to learn more about the Native American experience and to see how God is at work in the lives of the Native people. This trip is an important part of the week-long experience. If you are unwilling to be part of this day away we ask that you do not sign up for this SERVE site.
